Gledhill Attendance Policy

Dear Parents and Guardians,

As a parent/guardian, you play a vital role in your child’s academic success. The first step to academic achievement is establishing excellent school attendance habits. In order to support student achievement, the LAUSD set an attendance goal for all students to maintain a Proficient/Advanced attendance rate of 96% or higher throughout the school year. This means that students must have:

  • No more than one absence for every five weeks (25 instructional days) of school.
  • No more than SEVEN TOTAL absences in the school year.

At the end of the school year, we will recognize all students with perfect attendance.  Perfect attendance means no tardies, no leave earlies and no absences.

Only Exceptions (for leave early):

  • if you are attending a school tour (Magnet, SAS, Charter, Middle School) with prior Gledhill admin approval with at least 1 week notice.  Admin Approval form can be requested in the main office.  A proof of attendance from the toured school would need to be provided upon your child’s return.
  • if your child arrived to school and the nurse or Health Care Assistant sent your child home (that day only).

To help your child succeed and graduate on time, we are focusing our school efforts to improve student attendance.

It is important that your child is present at school every day and on time. Here are some suggestions to establish positive attendance habits:

  • Create morning and evening routines
  • Schedule all appointments for your child during non-school hours
  • Plan family vacations on non-school days only
  • Help your child develop a positive attitude toward school by encouraging him/her to participate in school activities
  • Communicate with your child’s teachers and PSA Counselor on a regular basis (i.e. ClassDojo, emails, verbal, etc.)

These suggestions will help to ensure your child does not develop a pattern of chronic absenteeism. Chronic absenteeism is a strong predictor of lower academic achievement and eventual dropout. The LAUSD is currently working hard to:

  • Identify at-risk students early in the school year
  • Address barriers impacting school attendance
  • Improve student attendance.

We look forward to working with you to help your child succeed in school!
